International Day Against Homphobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia

  • GR LGBTQ Healthcare Consortium Grand Rapids, MI United States (map)

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is observed every year on May 17. Its purpose is to organize global events that raise awareness of human rights violations against LGBT individuals and to inspire action for LGBT rights worldwide. By 2016, observances had occurred in over 130 countries.

The event was initially called the International Day Against Homophobia, and its founders created the IDAHO Committee to coordinate grassroots initiatives in various nations. The committee's mission was to promote the day and advocate for its official recognition on May 17. This date was chosen to honor the World Health Organization's 1990 decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness in the International Classification of Diseases.
