…but how am I going to pay for it?

Covering the cost of PrEP

Is Prep Covered by Insurance?

In most cases, YES!

As a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) PrEP must be free under almost all health insurance plans. Including private plans obtained from employers or purchased yourself from HealthCare.gov or state-based Marketplaces, and many state led Medicaid plans.

This means no out-of-pocket costs to you for the:

  • PrEP medication

  • Clinic visit to discuss PrEP

  • Lab tests needed to maintain your prescription

…But what about Medicare?

How can you find out if PrEP is covered at no cost to you under your health plan?

  1. If you have purchased private insurance or have coverage via an employer:

    • Call/check with your insurance company

    • Review the drug formulary/list online to find approved PrEP medication list

  2. If you are on Medicaid:

    • Check with your benefits counsellor

  3. If you purchased your health plan through Healthcare.gov OR a state-based Marketplace

  4. If you are on Medicare

    • Find which plans cover PrEP medications

What if I do not have insurance or Medicaid?
